Association News

February Association Meeting: Please plan to attend the next meeting on Tuesday, February 13 at 10am at the home of Jerry & Shirley Vinyard (Flamingos #51). Please note that this e-newsletter also serves as notification of a "special meeting" to be held during this meeting. We will be discussing and voting on the budget, as well as taking nominations for a new treasurer and president. All paid membership households have one vote. All members should plan to attend. The Vinyards have an adequate supply of chairs and will provide coffee and water. Members are encouraged to bring goodies to share.

Bienvenidos New Members and Neighbors: You have probably noticed that we have several new faces around town. Please be sure to stop by and introduce yourself to:

Bev Tomlinson (Gaviotas #7)
Hank & Carol Vanderschuur (Sol Nuevo #48)

Association Needs: Donations are currently needed for the following: 1) Harry Burnett wants to purchase a weed-wacker. This will allow Rogino, our grounds person, to trim the grass and weeds along the sidewalks more quickly, so he has more time to clean the streets and trim the shrubs; 2) Funds are needed to reimburse Danny Milski, who paid to fix the street lights out of his own pocket; and 3) Roque Garcia wants to raise money to install 32 topes throughout the Zona Residencial. He thinks he'll need about $11,000 pesos for the project, approximately $4,000 pesos of which will be needed for materials.

Volunteer Needed for Association Newsletter: The Guayabitos News is looking for one person to volunteer part-time. The job entails gathering information for upcoming events; attending, taking photos and writing a brief update of current events; compiling and editing information as needed; and submitting information in writing for this twice-monthly newsletter. These duties should be completed in your "free time," and this volunteer position will continue for a minimum of 1 year (and preferably longer). The pay is nada, but your time and efforts will be appreciated by all. If interested, please contact Allyson Williams at MexicanaAlly@att.net.

Keeping Tabs on our Past President and Treasurer: A sincere thank you to both Fred and Sue for taking on these challenging positions, and doing such a good job during the past year. Since we are about to induct a new President and Treasurer, I thought you might be interested in what our "Pasts" have been doing since resigning, and what their plans are for the near future. Fred Chace is not sure what he will get involved in. He is thinking about the possibility of promoting and improving the little public library in La Peñita, or other projects that will benefit the entire community, especially with regard to children and younger folks. He is intensely interested in health issues and peoples' ability to educate themselves. He and his wife, Teresa, have their house in Guayabitos up for sale, and are considering building elsewhere. Sue Moss wants to focus on the business of Hacienda del Mar, as well as to continue helping with fundraising efforts in the Jaltemba Bay area. She will support the efforts of the Association and be available on an as-needed basis for projects supporting the community.

Feb. 17-18: Qigong Class in San Pancho: Qigong is an ancient Chinese technique that may be 5,000 years old. It is composed of two words: "Qi" (pronounded "chee") which means energy; and "gong" which means work or skill. Qigong can then be defined as the skill working with your life force. It is a powerful technique that makes us more resilient to stress, reconnecting us with the world of nature and restoring full, vibrant health. Marisol Mayell, from Harmonia Holistica in Sayulita, will teach "Jade Women Qigong," a form taught by her teacher, Master Liu, that has been practiced in her family for several generations. It offers a powerful, self-healing method of disease prevention for women in all stages of life. And although designed for women, it is also recommended for men and pregnant women because of the strong benefits for the liver and blood circulation. During Marisol's stay in Mexico, she is also offering private healing Qigong instruction by appointment. Contact her at marisolmayell@mindspring.com. Where: Held at a private oceanfront home in San Pancho. Contact: Tamara Bode, Owner of Harmonia Holistica Spa in Sayulita at harmoniaspa@gmail.com or (322) 139-5231 to make reservations. + Updates

The Bridge of Life: Roque Garcia reported that an amazing $1,600 USD was donated from the citizens of Guayabitos and La Peñita and passers by, both Mexican, American and Canadian. After all the new paint, fencing, stainless steel wire and tools were purchased and put in place, nearly $450 USD was left over and will be applied towards repairing the bridge next year. Roque and Danny Milski want to thank everyone who donated money and all the volunteers who came out to fix the bridge. Information: Roque Garcia, Guayabitos

Free Spay & Neuter Clinic in Los Ayala & Lo de Marcos: Our second Spay and Neuter clinic was held Jan. 15-17 in Los Ayala. We had 74 animals brought to us in the three days. Sixteen cats and forty-two dogs were spayed or neutered. Sixteen animals were not done due to time constrictions or concern about animal safety. In addition, here were 18 consultations with the vets on a variety of health issues and 14 animals were adopted which was just amazing!!! The Lo de Marcos clinic held Jan. 20-23 successfully spayed or neutered over 60 animals and raised a total of $349.07 USD through the donation jar.

Between the two clinics, almost 120 animals were helped, and approximately 20 animals were adopted into good homes. The total raised so far is an amazing $5,322.94 USD. A heartfelt thanks to those who donated so generously and especially to those volunteers who tirelessly worked long hours to help spay and neuter these animals. All of these people (many not mentioned!) are truly dedicated members or friends of our community and deserve a special round of applause. This spay and neuter clinic would not be possible without ALL of you! You ALL made it happen! Thank you. Information and Photos: Lin Chimes, Los Ayala

Ally's Inside Scoop
on where to eat, drink, shop & play

Okay kids, here's the deal. Coming from the restaurant biz back in Minnesota, and being that one of my favorite past-times is shopping, I decided to add this section. Each month I will do my best to feature the newest restaurants and stores in town, as well as to remind you about a few you may have forgotten about. Plus, I'll give you my top picks for what to do in and around town. Now go on, give 'em a try.

+ New In Town

Nero Cafe: Mahuatzin, and his wife Nadia, just opened this adorable little cafe on main street in La Peñita on January 27th. They offer a large list of coffee drinks including espresso, americano, capuccino and lattes. In addition, they serve omelettes, french toast, burritos and quesadillas for breakfast; and salads, sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta and cold beer for lunch and dinner. Plus, they offer sushi on Friday and Saturday nights. There are 3 computers and work stations near the back with high-speed internet access that you can rent for $10 pesos per hour. Or if you prefer, bring in your computer, order a cup of coffee and bite to eat, and hook up to the internet for free. Open: 7:30am-10pm. Where: Av. Emiliano Zapata #32 (next to Luminarias Sports Bar), La Peñita.

Re-opening: Pan "Ama" Panaderia: In case you are in the mood for something sweet, you should know that Lupita has been working on moving her bakery and will re-open the doors on Friday, February 2 (that's today!). The signs weren't up and the place wasn't quite finished as of yesterday afternoon, but she assured me that she'll be ready to sell her wonderful pastries, bread and coffee starting bright and early this morning. The new location is one block south of main street through the corridor. Open: 1am-9:30pm. Where: end the south end of the corridor on Av. Alfredo V. Bonfil, La Peñita.

+ Just Down the Road

Captain Pablos: Next time you drive to Sayulita, why not stop by Captain Pablos. (If you're like me, you will either be going there on shopping expedition or to take surfing lessons.) This casual beach-side restaurant offers tradtional shrimp and fish dishes, burritos, quesadillas, fajitas, shrimp chiles rellenos, the best coconut shrimp around, as well as some of the best people watching around. It's a great place to grab a cold beer and a bite to eat, and run your toes through the sand. Open: 7am-10pm. Where: on the beach, to the north of the main beach access.
